Things to do and see:
This is a diving website and therefore not the place for a detailed look at the many options for adventure, entertainment and education in Egypt. You’ll need several visits to see everything in this country full of historical and natural wonders but here are a few ideas if you have time before or after you dives.
- Alexandria - This historical city with a Mediterranean feel is home to the ruins of Cleopatra's Palace and the Pharos lighthouse.
- Cairo - City of a thousand minarets. Crowded, hectic, confusing, amazing.
- Valley of the Kings – The Royal burial tombs of the pharaohs including Tutankhamen are an underground wonderland.
- Mount Sinai - Where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God.
- St Catherine's Monastery – Below Mount Sinai, the location of the burning bush
- Karnak – A vast temple complex build to house the Gods.
- The Egyptian Antiquities Museum - Houses Tutankhamen’s treasures and royal mummies.
- Aswan - The south Egyptian city on the banks of the Nile. From here you can do a daytrip to the sun temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel.
- Red Sea Monasteries - Day tours to the monasteries of St Paul and St Anthony in the red sea desert are available from Hurghada.
- Cruise the Nile – Cruise from Luxor to Aswan and take in the magnificent scenery. Or for a more Egyptian experience sail in a Felucca instead.
- Sand Dunes - Crescent-shaped dunes of Dakhla, "whalebacks" dunes of the Great Sand Sea, red dunes of Wadi Hamra. 4WD Jeep or Camel safaris in to the desert can give you the Bedouin experience for a few days.
- Eat the local food – A Mezze, consists of many delicious, small dishes Snacks from street stalls.
- Go shopping – Search the bazaars for camel hair carpets and silk scarves. Craft shops sell pottery, baskets and embroidery. All sorts of jewellery of classical or modern design.
