Language

A little Arabic is useful in remote areas but in any tourist areas English is widely spoken and many Egyptians love the chance to practice their English with you. German is also spoken in tourist resorts. An attempt to speak a few words of Arabic will always be greeted with appreciation.

• ahlan w-sahlan – Welcome/Hello
• ahlan bik (male) / biki (female) – Response to welcome
• fursa sa'eeda – nice to meet you
• izzayak (m) / izzayik (f) – How are you?
• ma'a salaama – goodbye
• ana mish fahem (m) / fahma (f) – I don’t understand
