Getting There
- Cairo is the main hub for international flights although divers usually arrive on charter flights from Europe to either Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada.
- It is also possible to travel overland to/from neighboring countries like Israel and Jordan
Visas
-
All visitors to Egypt must hold passports valid for at least six months beyond the proposed date of entry to the country. Citizens of most countries must also obtain tourist visas.
-
Regular 3 month tourist visas are available from Egyptian consulates abroad. These can either be single entry or multiple entry that allow you to go in and out of the country three times. Once issued these visas must be used within 6 months.
- For most nationalities, including Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and all EU citizens it is possible to get 30 day visas on arrival at international airports. Visa on arrival is not possible for arrivals overland.
Climate
-
From May to September, the air temperature ranges from 38 °C to 41 °C with July and August the hottest months. There is little breeze at this time of year and nights are warm.
-
From October to April the temperature is between 23 °C to 29 °C.
-
From December to February there is often a breeze to cool the air and the nights can get quite cold.
Health
-
No compulsory vaccinations are required but it is recommended that your hepatitis A, polio, typhoid, and tetanus jabs are up to date.
-
Most visitors come home with stories of upset stomachs and frequent dashes to the bathroom. Climate and food are the main causes of problems. Luckily Egyptian pharmacies are well stocked and the trained pharmacists speak English.
