The Arab Republic of Egypt covers 1,001,449 square kilometers/386,560 sq miles, of which 96% is desert.

Egypt borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the east. The northern coast borders the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern coast borders the Red Sea.

Egypt's population is 78 million. Because so much of the country is the Sahara desert, most of the population lives near the banks of the Nile where arable farming is possible. Around half the population lives in densely populated cities, notably Cairo and Alexandria.
- The majority of the population is Egyptian, Bedouin, Nubian or Berber with tiny minorities of Greeks, Armenians and others.
- The national language is Arabic.
- The national religion Islam which accounts for approximately 96 % of the population.
- The republic is governed by the National Democratic Party.
- Tourism is Egypt's largest income source, followed by Suez Canal tolls then oil and gas exports.
