  • Colombia has coastline facing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as the Caribbean Sea.
  • Colombia is a large country, over twice the size of France and is the third most populous country in Latin America with around 44 million people.
  • Colombia is an ethnically diverse nation thanks to heavy migration from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East in the twentieth century. The nation's culture has been shaped by all these different groups as well as by the cultures of the USA and other latin countries.
  • Colombia is a majority Roman Catholic country although other faiths are practiced.
  • Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, the Spanish colonised Colombia in the mid fifteenth century.
  • Colombia has had a violent history with political tensions and civil wars and some anti government insurgent groups are still fighting today. In recent years a harder line by the government against rebel armies in Colombia has seen a drop in armed conflict in the cities although large areas of countryside are still effectively controlled by guerilla groups.
  • Colombia is famous for it's rich culture and natural attractions. It is infamous for it's cocaine trade.
  • Other than drugs, Colombia's main exports are manufactured goods, petroleum, coffee, bananas and sugar crops.
  • Despite travel advisories warning against travel to Colombia the country is seeing year on year increases in tourist numbers and has a growing eco-tourism industry build around it's many areas of natural beauty including Caribbean beaches, the Amazon basin and Andean mountains.
