Dos and Don’ts

  • Casual dress is the norm in Chuuk but do not wear swim wear anywhere other than the beach or the dive boat.

  • The native language of Chuuk is Chuukese but English is also an official language and widely spoken.
  • Outer islands speak eight different indigenous dialects.

Things to do and see:

  • Carve yourself a Trukese love stick so that your lover can tell that it's you in the night!
  • Visit some of the lagoon islands.
  • See the Japanese lighthouse in Sapuk Village and the Japanese World War II cave in Nepokos. You can drive to it or hike up to it.
  • See the former Japanese communication center in the now Jesuit school.
  • Windsurfing and sailing is popular in the trade wind season.
