General Information

  • Chuuk, also still known as Truk, is an group of islands in the Western Pacific that along with Yap, Kosrae and Pohnpei, makes up the Federated States of Micronesia. It is also part of the Caroline Islands.
  • Chuuk Lagoon is the main population area of Chuuk State and is of most interest to divers. The archipelago of 69 small islands is surrounded by a barrier reef 140 miles in circumference.
  • The lagoon is 40 miles in diameter and reaches depths of 300 metres. It is where over 100 ships, planes and submarines now rest on the seabed, a legacy of the 1944 bombing raid, operation Hailstone, by the Allied Fleet on the Japanese Imperial Fleet. Diving on these wrecks is what attracts divers to Chuuk and forms Chuuk's main industry.
  • Chuuk state also includes several small outer islands which are remote and difficult to access.
  • The capital of Chuuk is Weno.
  • Truk was in the past a colony of Spain, Germany and Japan. It changed it's name back to Chuuk in 1986 when the Compact of Free Association was signed with the USA. In 1991 the FSM became a member of the United Nations.
