General Information
- The Cayman Islands is made up of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac and are located 480 miles south of Miami. Total land area is around 100 square miles.
- Christopher Colombus first sighted the Cayman Islands in 1503 and named them Las Tortugas after the large amounts of turtles on the islands. Sir Francis Drake arrived later in 1586 and named the islands the Cayman Islands.
- The Cayman Islands and Jamaica were governed together as one colony by England from 1670 until 1962. In 1962 Jamaica became an independent Commonwealth realm and the Cayman Islands became a British Overseas Territory.
- Despite the historical link to Britain it is now the USA that is more influencial over the Cayman Islands.
- Most of the Cayman Islands extimated 50,000 population live on Grand Cayman where the capital George Town is located. There are around 1,500 people living on Cayman Brac and around 200 on Little Cayman.
- Grand Cayman is also where most tourists visit and is where cruise ships dock.
- Cayman Islands people enjoy the highest standard of living of any Caribbean island thanks to it's strong tourism industry and to it's position as an offshore financial centre.
