Bonaire Tourist Information

Public Transport

  • Taxis are available at the airport.
  • You can hire a taxi for the day to sightsee around the island. It should cost around US$25 per day.
  • You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car (25 years old with some firms).
  • Bikes are scooters can also be rented.
  • Cars drive on the right.
  • There are no traffic lights on Bonaire!

 

Food and Drink

  • Bonaire doesn’t really grow any food of its own but the cuisine on the island is still rich and varied.
  • There are no nightclubs on Bonaire so evening entertainment is a relaxed dinner at an open air restaurant
  • Fresh fish is on most menus. Barbeques are popular. Most international foods are available including Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Mexican to name a few.

 

Public Holidays and Festivals

  • February and March sees carnivals in the two towns of Rincon and Kralendijk.
  • There is also entertainment of the streets of Kralendijk in October during the week long sailing regatta.
  • Christmas day and Boxing Day are both public holidays as is Antilles day in late October.

 

Dos and Don’ts

  • Don’t wear beach clothes down town. Dress casual
  • Topless or nude sunbathing is not permitted except for Sorobon Beach resort which is a privately owned nudist resort.
  • Don’t think that the drug laws are as relaxed in Bonaire as they are in Holland. They are not.
