General Information

  • Bonaire is located in the Dutch Caribbean, or Netherlands Antilles, 50 miles north of Venezuela and 86 miles east of Aruba. It is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and together with Aruba and Curacao it forms the ABC Islands. It is the least developed of the three islands.
  • The Dutch captured the ABC islands from the Spanish in 1633 and Bonaire became a plantation of the Dutch West India Company. Slave quarters are still visible on parts of the island.
  • Bonaire consistently rates as a top scuba and snorkeling location but is also popular with sailors, windsurfers, kite surfers, kayakers, mountain bikers and bird watchers.
  • Bonaire translates to “Good Air”
  • 30% of visitors to Bonaire are repeat travelers.
  • Bonaire has a good reputation for being eco-friendly, particularly marine preservation and maintains a laid back, unspoilt feel. The whole coastline of the island is declared a marine sanctuary.  Only 5% of the land area is developed. The whole island community has voted to resist mass tourism in favour of the environment.
  • Bonaire is small, the land area is 111 sq miles and the population is just 14,000. Bonaire is 22 miles long and just 5 miles wide. There are two towns called Rincon and Kralendijk.
  • Over 50,000 annual tourists swell the population. 50% of the tourists are from the United States.
  • Bonaire is famous for its Pink Flamingo population. They get their distinctive colour from the pink brine shrimp that eat.
  • The salt pans of Bonaire provide a major export and the salt mountains are visible from most parts of the island.
