Bermuda Tourist Information

Food and Drink

  • All types of food are available in Bermuda including pizza, Mexican, Indian, French, Asian and West Indian. Take away and self catering is also an option.
  • Seafood is found on most menus especially locally caught tuna, wahoo and rockfish. Bermuda lobster is in season from October to March.
  • Most food is imported from the US so restaurants are expensive. The further you get from the cruise ship docks, the cheaper the food will be.
  • Some unique Bermudian dishes are salted codfish and boiled potatoes, Cassava pie (a Christmas dish), Hop n' John (boiled rice and beans) and bay grape jelly.
  • Local chefs also cook international cuisine with a Bermudan influence.
  • There are several British pubs that serve pub grub. There is also an Irish pub. These form the mainstay of evening entertainment, particularly in the winter. The St George area is a good place for a pint.
  • In the summer there are often scheduled evening entertainments around the island and different bands in hotel bars.
  • Bermuda's most popular drink is rum. Try a Rum Swizzle (a mix of Demerera Rum and Jamaica Rum with a mixture of citrus fruits). A Dark and Stormy is another favourite, a mixture of local rums and ginger beer.

Public Holidays and Festivals

  • Bermuda Day on 24 May is the start of the summer. There ius a street parade in Hamilton plus street parties and a sailing dinghy competition.
  • The Queen's birthday is celebrated mid June with a military parade on front street.
  • Emancipation day and the end of July is followed directly by Somers day when the island basically closes down for the Annual Cup Match Classic, a cricket match between Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club. It's a four day weekend of parties, eating and a little gambling.
  • Other holidays are Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25-26 December), New Years Day, Good Friday, Labour day (first week of September), Remembrance Day (11 November)
  • Most shops close every Sunday.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Do slow down to "Bermuda time".
  • It is considered good manners to greet people with good morning/afternoon/evening. Do this with everyone and you will receive friendly, helpful service.
  • Why not kit your self out with a smart pair of Bermuda shorts, considered the correct attire for a Bermudian gentleman. Ideally they should be made of suit like material and worn with knee length socks, shirt, tie and blazer.
  • Homosexuality is taboo in Bermuda.
