General Information

  • Belize is the second smallest country in Central America, a Caribbean paradise on the west coast of Central America between Mexico and Guatemala.
  • Belize was known as British Honduras until it won independence in 1981 and is now the youngest Central American nation.
  • Modern Belize is a stable, democratic nation with a high per capita income by Central American standards.
  • The population is around 295,000 with Belize City the largest city in the country with a population around 70,000.
  • Belize society has mixed Maya, European, Asian, African and Creole cultures and is generally a laid-back Caribbean style place to be.
  • Belize is not as cheap to travel in as other countries in the region. It receives significantly less tourists, particularly less American tourists, than Costa Rica and Mexico. That said, tourism is a major income earner for Belize with one third of the national workforce employed in tourism.
  • Belize has the longest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere and the highest waterfall in Central America.
  • Large areas of protected rainforest make Belize a nature lover’s paradise with abundant wildlife including Pumas and Jaguars.
  • The National Bird of Belize is the Toucan.
