Language
- Aruba’s population consists of over 40 nationalities, including Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, African, English and French and this has created a native language, Papiamento. The official language is Dutch but most Arubans also speak English and Spanish.
Things to do and see
- Visit the Archeological Museum in Oranjestad, which houses artifacts and pottery retrieved from numerous diggings around the island and depicts the life of Aruba’s earliest Indian settlers.
- Built in 1796, Fort Zoutman is Oranjestad’s oldest building and is now a museum of Aruba’s history and the location of the weekly Bon Bini Festival.
- Trade winds blowing consistent 15 knot plus breezes make Aruba a favourite destination for Kitesurfers and Windsurfers.
- If you like gambling you’ll love the Aruba casino scene.
- The Kunucu, or countryside is worth visiting to see a different side of Aruba. The dry landscape with cacti and sand dunes is in contrast to the white powder sand beaches. The Arikok National Park is home to natural bridge of coral rock sculpted by hundreds of years of wind and waves.
- Play a round of golf at the Tierra del Sol golf course. You may spot the tiny shoco (owls) that next there.
- From March to August watch Hawksbill, Green and Loggerhead turtle come ashore to lay their eggs.
- Go shopping – Aruba is duty free.
- Dance the night away at one of Aruba’s discos or enjoy a show.
