Antigua Tourist Information

Food and Drink

  • If you want to try local Antiguan food you’ll probably have to venture out from your hotel with its standard and overpriced European menu. Some specialties of Antigua, available at local restaurants  are:
  • Ducana - sweet potato mixed with coconut and spices, steamed in a banana leaf
  • Pepper pot stew
  • Salted codfish
  • Souse (pickled Pork) – Pork marinated in lime juice, onions, peppers and spices.
  • Local curries are also delicious
  • The local beer is called Wadadli and there are many great tasting types of rum.
  • Most nightlife is centred around restaurants or hotel bars. Restaurants can be busy in peak season and booking may be necessary.

Public Holidays and Festivals

  • For a full list of festivities contact the tourist board
  • There is a summertime festival, an April sailing week, jazz festivals, cricket matches and more.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Do take time to greet people before asking for something. To walk in a shop and demand service before saying good day is considered rather rude by Antiguans and will probably result in you being ignored.
  • Tipping is normal practice and if it’s not already on the bill tip between 10 and 15%.
  • Dress respectfully when not on the beach or in your resort, Antigua is a Christian country. Some resorts may not allow topless bathing, it’s best to ask first.

Language

  • English is spoken but with a very broad accent that can take a while to get used to. Speak slowly if you find that you are not being understood.
