General Information
- Antigua is a tiny West Indies island in the Caribbean Leeward Islands. Just 108 square miles in size.
- 32 miles to the north is the coral island of Barbuda.
- Settled by the British in 1600’s when they produced sugar and rum on the island.
- The main income earner is now tourism. Good winds make sailing popular and coral reefs attract scuba divers from around the world. Antigua is a regular stop on cruise liners routes.
- Antigua is also famous for it's love of cricket and has produced some of the West Indie’s best players, most notably Sir Vivian Richards.
- The island is becoming increasingly developed. A 15 minute flight away is Barbuda, Antigua’s less developed, more chilled-out neighbour.
- Antigua gained independence in 1981 and governed as a parliamentary democracy.
- Antigua's head of state is Her Majesty the Queen of England.
