Just a short flight from Europe or a long haul flight for Americans, the Red Sea is a dive destination that everyone should visit at least once and many choose to return to several times a year. From the easy to get to Egyptian dive sites near Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada or the Israeli port of Eilat to the areas further from the beaten path in Jordan, Sudan and Oman and Djibouti, the Red Sea truly has something for every diver, and plenty for their non diving partner too.
Shore dives and day boat dives are possible for those who want to combine their Red Sea adventure with some land based activities. For the hard core bubble blowers there is also a wide selection of liveaboard dive safari options to get you to the more remote sites.
There are dives suitable for all levels of diver, from high adrenalin deep dives like the Blue Hole to shallow drift dives over beautiful coral reefs. There are also some of the world’s best wrecks, most notably the HMS Thistlegorm. Visibility is excellent and the water temperate is warm (most of the time). Add to this the year round sunshine and the fantastic desert backdrops and you begin to understand why spending time on a Red Sea dive boat is an experience not to be missed.
Red Sea diving is big business especially in the more established Egyptian areas of Sharm and Hurghada where dozens of Scuba shops compete for your business. In the past, reef protection has been secondary to profit taking but the local dive operators now appreciate what a precious resource they are guardians of and have put in place diving standards to protect the reefs, including National Marine Parks, mooring buoy projects and diving standards such as no gloves, no touch policies.
