Kenya Dive Sites - Malindi and Watumu dive sites

Malindi Marine Park has an attractive sand beach coastline with a coral reef running the entire length. Much of the reefs are hard coral, mainly large potato coral bommies with patches of staghorn coral, brain coral, mushroom coral and finger coral. Sea anemones, sea fans and sponges are also numerous. The coral reef top is exposed in places at low tide. Reef fish are prolific including schools of snapper, fusilier, moorish idols and sergeant majors. Parrotfish, anemone fish, wrasse, grouper, angelfish, lionfish and many more species are also common. On the outside edges of the reefs where the water deepens larger pelagic species can be seen. Coral gardens are home to turtles. Many dive sites have mooring buoys. Watumu Marine Park is 14 miles south of Malindi and has small submerged reefs of hard coral, sponges and anemones host a myriad of reef fish. Visibility is usually excellent.

Turtle

Turtle Reef is on the inside edge of the reef with a maximum depth of just 10m. This dive site is suitable for all levels of diver. Coral bommies are seperated by patches of sand and are home to all the usual reef fish. Turtles are common here. Large stingrays can be seen over the sand. This is a great site to see macro critters such as ghost pipefish, seamoths, frogfish and leaf scorpionfish.

Moray Reef starts with a coral garden at 10m before dropping off to 30m deep. The wall is home to giant moray eels, some of them very big indeed. Large pelagic species can be seen on the drop off.

North Moray Reef is another shallow reef that drops off. The reef wall is covered with gorgonian sea fans and reef fish including schools of snapper and fusilier. Eagle eyed divers will be able to spot the better camouflaged creatures such as stonefish and octopus. Whale sharks are easier to spot when they pass by.

Cracas Reef is also a reef and wall dive with a maximum depth of 28m. Leopard sharks can be seen here as can large groupers and dolphins.

Drummers Reef also has a drop off where it is possible to see manta rays and dolphins. Napolean Wrasse and turtles can also be seen.

Probation Reef is a popluar spot for white tip reef shark sightings. Large schools of trevally hunt the glass fish that reside around the coral heads here.
